Blue Dasher

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” — Colossians 3:23-24

Resting on top a stem is a beautiful Blue Dasher Dragonfly. He is actually perched in this unique position with his abdomen straight up to cool his insides on a hot summer day. By our standards their lifespan is very short (about three years). They are amazing creatures with compound eyes made of thousands of smaller eyes giving them 360 degrees of viewing and a keen ability to detect motion from virtually any direction. They begin and spend most of their lives in water. Once transformed into amazing aerial artist they live only a few months.

Their flying skills have marveled scientist and engineers for ages, as their four wings work independently producing propulsion and flight unmatched by any living creature or machine. They can fly like a jet, yet change direction instantly and even hover like a helicopter. Not only are they amazing fliers, but have Ninja skills as predators. For us who live in south Louisiana, where the unofficial bird is the mosquito (joking), they are our friends for they primarily eat mosquitoes and devour up to a 100 a day. Wow! 😮

The allure of photographing dragonflies is powerful. Though there are tested strategies for getting good dragonfly pictures, I have found persistence, patience and having the right gear are key ingredients to capturing these astounding creatures on film.

Out in the field, the business of capturing the photo often takes away what is most revealed in silence when developing images. It is here, I was left speechless at how this beautiful creature shows the infinite wonder of God as creator. Like the “Blue Dasher,” our time is short so live a life of splendor, like a shooting star, for Jesus.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” — Jeremiah 29:11

“Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” — 1 Peter 1:13

“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” — 1 Corinthians 10:31

“What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice, for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” — Philippians‬ ‭1:18-21‬
